Safety Precautions for Your
New Battery Pack or Recell
At Rathbone Energy, Inc., we
strive to improve safety.
For example:
- Wiring: In rebuilding a
dead Anton Bauer Logic Magnum Series ProPac we replace the 26 AWG
black negative wire with a 20AWG black negative wire.
- In the Newer Digital ProPac
and Hytron the primary black negative wire comes standard as 20 AWG.
- We disconnect ONLY the
positive and negative terminal from the dead insert and then
connect the positive and negative terminal back to the new insert
and add fire retardant heat shrink tube insulators over the weld
tabs.
- On all these packs we add
hot glue over the internal area of the fuse tabs and connecting
wire for more strength and stress reduction.
- We test the circuit boards.
- We test each packs voltage
through the pin connectors and finally on
Anton Bauer Quad 2702 InterActive chargers with the DDM before shipping back to
you.
- Lithium Ion: The only
battery packs with sensors "attached" to the individual cells are lithium ion
from any OEM. Lithium Ion is a whole other animal and we are
working on those replacement insert designs now. We have a replacement
for the Dionic 90.
Lithium Ion Battery Packs
- Cell Tubing:
- Fiber Tubes-Required:
On our Premium lines of battery inserts we require the manufacturers PVC shrink tube to be on all cells to
verify we have used the cells we state in our specifications. We
then enclose those manufacturers brand labeled PVC shrink covered
cells with fiber tubes
for added safety. Pictures below show why, on our premium lines, we use fiber
tubes and top and bottom fiber insulators instead! Pictures may be enlarged with a
click for a cleaner picture. Hoover 3 seconds to read picture text information.
-

- We add fiber insulators
covering the entire top and bottom of the battery packs and weld
tabs after each pack is finished.

Our Sanyo HR-DU (10) nickel metal hydride battery cell insert for Your dead Hytron
100, 120, 140 is shown in pictures.
- The cell manufacturers Brand
labeled PVC shrink IS required on all cells before being enclosed
in fiber tubes. This is to verify that the cell we purchase
and the cell you receive are exactly what we and you have
purchased.
- If you see bare cells in
generic PVC sleeves or fiber tubes the chances are very high that
you are probably Not getting what you were told.
Battery Cell Switch &
Bait
- Hytron 50 Precautions
- Welding Battery Cells: We use very expensive
state of the art welders specifically designed for lithium ion cells.
These welders also do a much better job welding the tabs onto nickel
cadmium, nickel metal hydride, and dry cell lead acid battery cells.
Since humidity and weather also play a roll in securing a weld tab properly
our entire facility is a heat, air, and humidity controlled environment.
- Cells:
- For example: The Anton Bauer
New Video Handbook discusses press negative, sintered on sinter,
and heavily porous battery cells.
- The Anton Bauer 72WH / 75WH Logic
Magnum series nickel cadmium battery pack uses the Sanyo
KR5000DEL Press Negative cell, 500 discharge cycles. This is the industry
standard cell for the 72WH / 75WH battery pack. AB 60WH ProPac comes
OEM with the Sanyo N4000DRL.
- At Rathbone Energy, Inc., we use the
Best "Available" battery cell for improved capacity, durability, performance, charge-discharge
cycles, and heat tolerance, when doing a recell of these battery
packs. The standard for our 77/82WH battery cell pack.
- We will use the Sanyo
N4000DRL 60/65WH at your request.
- At Rathbone Energy, Inc., we
also supply links to All the major brand battery manufacturers
cell specifications for each particular battery so you can see
for yourselves the actual cell specifications available.
- Avoid Harsh Mechanical Shock
of Your Battery
- Do Not Drop Your Battery
- Note the temperature
precautions listed on your battery
- Terminology
Notes:
- Sintered on Sinter or Sintered
Positive Electrode: US
and Japanese term for industry type manufacturing technique.
- Heavily Porous: US and
Japanese term for Panasonic manufacturing technique.
- Press Negative: US term for
Sanyo KR series manufacturing technique.
- Pasted Negative: Japanese
term for Sanyo KR Series manufacturing technique.
- If you see the wording
Heavily porous and Sanyo in the same sentence chances are you are
reading marketing spin from someone telling you whatever they
think you want to hear to close a sale..
- Rebuild: Installation of a new
battery insert, inspection of the battery case, wiring harness, and
fuses with repair and upgrades needed or applicable, extensive testing.
- Recell and Refill: Installation of
a replacement insert, all short cuts and low end cells..

Regarding, The Anton Bauer NEW Video Battery Handbook
Although this handbook, (The Anton Bauer NEW Video Battery Handbook), is written by Anton Bauer staff with an
obvious spin
to promote Anton Bauer products it is a well written handbook full
of important information.
May we suggest that you read portions of this handbook as needed
for some useful and some important information. Simply keep
in mind that it is written to promote Anton Bauer products and do
not get caught up in the spin.

Disclaimer:
There are always variables on the routine of your battery packs and
you are not watching them every single second.
We live in a highly legalistic society.
We are little and
privately financed. We take pride in our high quality work
and product. Accidents happen. Try to take care of your quality merchandise and
it will last you a long time.
From the bottom of our warranty page:
We reserve the right to interpret any and all conditions and
situations listed and those not here listed in such a manner as we
deem appropriate. Under no circumstances shall we be liable
for any injury, loss, damage, or expense suffered or incurred with
respect to any defective or non-defective product or use of that
product.
Our warranty is so specific because
over the years a few broadcast and production people took advantage
of us like we were a free rental house or like we have seen some do
large retail companies such as Wal-Mart. Some of these are
your colleagues in the profession and are also the reason we do
not offer a 38 month warranty.
Consider:
We have seen so many
broadcast / film battery rebuilding companies close, much later,
even years later, open again, or come back under a different name, silently
close again, and then close
again. They always come back with a crafty spin, gimmicks, cheap
prices, and plugging brand names while using cheap cells.
We know because when you have problems later we get your calls.
Through all of our own challenges we have kept our doors open
faithfully for your business since 1989. Our FAQ sheets supply you
with total detail on every item we assemble and specifications for
every cell available as well as what to look for in a good vendor
and a bad vendor.
